- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
- ===================
- IBM or IBM Compatible system
- 80 column 16-color video (CGA, MCGA, EGA, VGA, or TANDY)
- At least one floppy drive. Hard drive recommended
- MS-DOS or PC-DOS Version 3.3 or 4.0
-
-
- ===============
- GETTING STARTED
- ===============
- Before you do anything else, you might want to make a backup copy of the DOS
- HELPER diskette. DOS HELPER can be run from a floppy drive, however, it is
- recommended that you install it on your hard drive. DOS HELPER requires only
- about 200K (0.2MB) of disk space. This includes the DOS HELPER enhancement
- commands. If you run DOS HELPER from a floppy drive, you must have a path to
- your DOS directory. The best way to establish this path is to have a PATH
- statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
-
-
- =====================
- INSTALLING DOS HELPER
- =====================
- Two versions of DOS Helper are provided on the diskette. One version is for
- DOS 3.3 users and the other for DOS 4.0. The SETUP program provided on the
- diskette will determine which version of DOS is installed on your system and
- then install the correct version of DOS Helper on your hard drive. If a
- version of DOS other than 3.3 or 4.0 is installed on your system, SETUP will
- install the version of DOS Helper that most closely matches your system.
- SETUP also copies the enhancement commands (MOVE.EXE, LCD.EXE, LF.EXE,
- SIZE.EXE, HIDE.COM, and UNHIDE.COM) to your DOS directory. SETUP also
- creates a file (AUTOEXEC.DH) which is placed in the root directory of your
- hard disk. This file is a modified version of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
- The modifications insure that there is a path to your DOS directory and to
- the DOS HELPER directory. You can elect to let SETUP automatically make the
- same changes to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, or you can make the changes yourself.
- If SETUP changes your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, it will also make a backup of your
- old file (AUTOEXEC.B01). If you do not have an AUTOEXEC.BAT file, SETUP
- will make one for you.
-
-
- =============
- RUNNING SETUP
- =============
- When you are ready to install DOS HELPER, insert the DOS HELPER diskette in
- drive A. At the DOS prompt, type A: and then press Enter. This will make A:
- the default drive. (You can also place the diskette in another drive, such
- as B, and then make it the default drive.) Now, at the DOS prompt enter,
-
-
- setup
-
- SETUP will ask you where you want to install DOS HELPER and where your DOS
- directory is located. Just follow the instructions on the screen. You can
- exit SETUP by pressing the ESC key.
-
-
- ======================================
- RUNNING DOS HELPER FROM A FLOPPY DRIVE
- ======================================
- As noted before, there are two versions of DOS Helper provided on the
- diskette. The DH.COM program will determine which version of DOS is
- installed on your system and then run the version of DOS Helper that most
- closely matches your system.
-
- If you choose to run DOS HELPER from a floppy drive, insert the DOS HELPER
- diskette in drive A. At the DOS prompt, type A: and then press Enter to make
- A: the default drive. (You can also place the diskette into another drive,
- such as B, and then make it the default drive.) Now, at the DOS prompt enter,
-
- dh
-
- Remember that DOS HELPER needs a path to your DOS directory in order to use
- the external DOS commands.
-
-
- ====================================
- RUNNING DOS HELPER FROM A HARD DRIVE
- ====================================
- If you have run SETUP to install DOS HELPER on your hard drive and your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file contains the necessary paths to your DOS and DH
- directories, you are ready to run DOS HELPER.
-
- NOTE: The changes made to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file will not take effect until
- AUTOEXEC.BAT is run. AUTOEXEC.BAT is run each time you boot up your
- computer. If you have not re-booted since the changes were made, you must do
- so now. Remember to remove diskettes from the floppy drives first.
-
- You can now, and anytime in the future, run DOS HELPER by just entering at
- the DOS prompt,
-
- dh
-
- If you use a menu program and want to add DOS HELPER, the program name is DH
- and the directory is \DH.
-
-
- ================
- USING DOS HELPER
- ================
- DOS HELPER provides on-line help while you use DOS. The program gives the
- user a choice of two modes of operation; a menu "assist" mode and a direct
- "command line" mode. In either mode, help screens can be displayed with just
- the press of a key.
-
- THE DOS HELPER SCREEN
- Across the top of the DOS HELPER screen you will see a main menu bar. Below
- is the main window which will display the results of a DOS operation or a
- help screen for a selected command. Below the display window is the command
- input line. The command line also has a directory bar which displays the
- current default directory. At the bottom of the screen is a options menu.
-
- The options are:
-
- ESC - Use ESC to toggle between the "assist" mode and the "command line"
- mode. ESC will also cancel the current action and return the user
- to the main menu.
-
- F1 - Displays help screen for command currently highlighted or command
- entered on the command line.
-
- F2 - F2 is a toggle that turns the BROWSE mode "on" and "off." When
- BROWSE is "on," help screens are automatically displayed as you move
- (arrow) through the drop-down menus.
-
- F3 - Displays a list of all the DOS commands available. Commands
- are listed by the categories used in the main menu.
-
- F4 - Changes video page to actual DOS page (screen). This allows the
- user to see the full result of a DOS operation, such as a DIRectory
- listing. Pressing any key returns you to DOS HELPER.
-
-
- ===================================
- USING DOS HELPER IN THE ASSIST MODE
- ===================================
- 1. Highlight the command category on the menu bar by using the arrow keys
- or by pressing the first letter of the category. For example, to get
- to the Directory category, press "d."
-
- 2. Press "Enter" to display a drop-down menu for that category.
-
- 3. Highlight a command by using the arrow keys or by pressing a
- highlighted letter (red caps).
-
- 4. If you want help, pressing the F1 key will display a help screen for
- the highlighted command.
-
- 5. Pressing "Enter" selects the command and brings it down to the command
- line. A blinking cursor indicates the position on the command line.
- The user may now enter any parameters and/or options he chooses.
-
- 6. After the command line is set, you can press "Enter" to execute the
- command.
-
- 7. The results of the command will be shown in the display window.
-
- 8. The cursor is then returned to the beginning of the main menu bar for
- the user to make another selection.
-
-
- =========================================
- USING DOS HELPER IN THE COMMAND LINE MODE
- =========================================
- You can switch back and forth between the "assist" mode and the "command
- line" mode by pressing the ESC key. The OPTIONS MENU at the bottom of the
- screen tells you what the ESC key will yield. When you switch to the command
- line mode, a blinking cursor will appear on the command line. You can now
- enter DOS commands just as you would at the normal DOS prompt.
-
- Forget what command you want to use? No problem, just press the F3 key and
- all of the DOS commands will be displayed!
-
- You can exit DOS HELPER from the command line, by entering "quit."
-
-
- GETTING HELP WHILE ON THE COMMAND LINE
- Pressing the F1 key will display a help screen for the command you have
- entered. If the command line is empty or you have entered an illegal
- command, an error message "Bad Command Name," will be displayed.
-
-
- ==========================
- PROBLEMS YOU MAY ENCOUNTER
- ==========================
- You press the F4 (DOS PAGE) key, but all you get is a blank screen.
- On start-up, DOS HELPER clears the DOS page. If you press F4 before you
- have executed any DOS commands, you will see a totally blank screen.
-
- You execute what appears to be a legal DOS command, but the message, "Bad
- Command Name," is displayed.
- This probably means that you have not established a correct path to your
- DOS directory. If you are sure that the path is correct, check to see if
- the command is present in your DOS directory.
-
- While running DOS HELPER from a floppy drive, you execute one of the DOS
- HELPER enhancement commands, but get a "Bad Command Name" message.
- This probably means that you no longer have a path to these commands.
- This will happen if,
- (1) you have changed the default directory to a directory other than
- the root directory on the floppy drive; or
- (2) you have removed the DOS HELPER diskette from the drive.
- To avoid this problem, either install DOS HELPER on your hard drive using
- the SETUP program, or copy the enhancement commands (MOVE.EXE, LCD.EXE,
- LF.EXE, SIZE.EXE, HIDE.COM,and UNHIDE.COM) to your DOS directory.
